Regional Variations of Slot Machines: American Slot Machines
American slot machines can be traced way back in the 1930's when they were first introduced to the public. And after some years, these machines were able to get through Las Vegas. The first gaming institution that used these types of machines is the Flamingo Hotel.
In the 1980's, these machines were determined as very profitable compared to table games. At the present, about 2/3 of the profits of casinos in United States are coming from slots. Of all the states of United States, only the State of Nevada doesn't have any law restricting the playing of slots, either in public or private. Seeing some people playing slots inside the airports of Las Vegas is not that surprising at all.
Aside from the State of Nevada, there are also other states within United States that allow the use of American slot machines but they are strictly regulated by individual state governments. Like for example, in New Jersey, slots are only admitted within the hotels and casinos that are operating in Atlantic City.
In other states such as Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa, slots are only allowed on licensed barges and riverboats. In Delaware, slots can only be found in three horse tracks and these are regulated authoritatively by the lottery commission of the state.
American slots are classified into two types: Class II and Class III. But because there is no federal law that governs the use of slots in the whole United States, the following classifications may differ from one state to another.
Class II slots are known as Video Lottery Terminals or VLTs. These are linked to a centralized computer system that decides the result of every bet made. Class II slots are like imitation of scratch-off lottery tickets wherein every machine is given equal opportunity of winning a sequence of circumscribed prizes.
Class III slots are known as the traditional slots. These machines are operated independently and are not linked to a centralized computer system. The chance of a player to win payouts is the same with every game. Class III slots are usually found in Atlantic City and Nevada. These are sometimes called as "Vegas-style slots".
The American types of slots can be played by anybody, either with or without skills in slot playing. There are slot clubs within the United States that offer free memberships. Members of these clubs will get a small return percentage from the money wagered in the slot games in the form of comps or cash back.
American slot machines are now popular in any casino because they are easy to play with and the prizes are quite remarkable.
